The Word “Technology”
Here at RagwormHQ we pride ourselves on finding out about the backgrounds of our customers or about projects we find interesting. We use the word technology on a day to day basis but how much do we actually know about the background of this word? Where did it originate from?
The word technology is built up from two transliterated Greek words; techne and logos.
Techne: This means art, skill, craft or by the way things are gained
Logos: This means word, the utterance by which inward thought is expressed, a saying, or an expression
This shows us that technology literally means: Words or discourse by which something is gained.
Years ago technology was used as a much wider term than what it is used for today- this included using it for things such as art and politics.
Throughout time some people believe we have made the term mean something narrower. However, we believe that the word has been given a true meaning and now stands for more than just what is above.
Technology now has only one meaning however pairing it with other words broadens that one meaning. For example a technological object- Technology is the set of means (tools, devices, systems, methods, procedures) created by the technological process. Technological objects range from toothbrushes to transportation systems.
